Celebrate Banned Books Week: And Your Freedom to Read!

(September)

by Kimberly Blaker

Introduction and Excerpts:

The most common challenges claim the controverted material to be offensive, sexually explicit, unsuited to the age group, or violent. But challengers to the freedom to read find a host of other reasons for the proposed banning of books. They argue such literature is, contains, discusses, and/or in their opinion, endorses, occult/Satanism, abortion, drugs, anti-family, sex education, nudity, homosexuality, sexism, racism, insensitivity, anti-ethnic, inaccuracy, religious or political viewpoints with which challengers disagree, and more.

Challenged Teen/Young Adult Books
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
Forever by Judy Blume
My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier
The Giver by Lois Lowry
