The problem is that this career, which is meant to give a mother more time with her children, often leaves less time and energy than if she was working away from home. By the time a childcare provider changes diapers, prepares and cleans up meals and snacks, picks up toys half a dozen times, disciplines children, does a little bookkeeping, and answers phone calls from nervous parents, there might be time left to read a story to the tots. A caregiver having time to eat lunch is unheard of, and the costs of food, toys, upkeep of the home (childcare areas), and losses from parents who don't pay can turn this into a no-income career.
